How do I select a material based on Strength, Toughness, and Heat Resistance?

The choice boils down to your part’s working environment. Here is a quick breakdown of how our materials stack up:

High Strength (Load-Bearing & Rigidity)

  • Best Plastic/Resin: PEEK or Glass-Filled Nylon (PA12+GF). If you need sub-micron precision with extreme stiffness, choose Somos® PerFORM resin.
  • Best Metal: Stainless Steel 316L or Titanium.
  • Verdict: Metals win on pure yield strength, but PEEK offers the best strength-to-weight ratio for aerospace/medical applications.

High Toughness (Impact & Flex Resistance)

  • Best Plastic/Resin: Nylon PA12 (SLS/MJF) or Somos® Taurus resin.
  • Best Metal: Titanium Alloy.
  • Verdict: If your parts need to withstand snap-fitting or drop tests without shattering, Nylon is the industry standard. For flexible applications, we also run UTR Flex.

Heat Resistance (Thermal Stability)

Best Plastic/Resin: UTR-Therm (withstands up to 130°C) or PEEK (continuous use up to 250°C+).

Best Metal: All metal materials excel here, typically handling 300°C to 500°C+.

Verdict: For testing airflow or rapid tooling, UTR-Therm or Somos® PerFORM offer excellent heat deflection (HDT).
