Aesthetic Integrity: Solving Color Deviations and Optimizing Surface Roughness (Ra)

In many applications, the visual quality of a 3D printed part is as critical as its mechanical function. However, achieving consistent color and a premium surface finish requires rigorous control over material purity and machine parameters. This article explores Justway’s internal protocols for mitigating cosmetic defects like color shifts, impurities, and excessive surface roughness.

1. Troubleshooting Color Inconsistencies

Color deviation is one of the most common visual challenges in resin and powder-based printing. At Justway, we categorize and resolve these issues through three primary lenses:

Batch Variation & Aging:

* The Problem: Resin can undergo subtle chemical shifts when exposed to oxygen or recycled multiple times, leading to "yellowing" or "paleness."

  • Justway Strategy: We implement strict resin turnover protocols and use UV-blocking storage. For critical aesthetic parts, we prioritize virgin resin batches to ensure color saturation.

Internal Impurities (Black/White Spots):

  • The Problem: Microscopic carbonized particles or cross-contamination from previous builds can appear as tiny specks on the surface.
  • Justway Strategy: Our technicians perform high-precision filtration of the resin/powder after every build. We maintain a "Clean-Room" environment for our high-end SLA fleet to minimize airborne contaminants.

Uneven Transparency:

  • The Problem: For clear resins, inconsistent UV curing depth can create "clouds" or hazy patches inside the part.
  • Justway Strategy: We optimize the Laser Power and Scanning Speed to ensure uniform cross-sectional curing, followed by a stabilized secondary UV post-cure cycle.

2. Mastering Surface Quality & Roughness

Surface roughness (Ra) is not just about aesthetics; it affects friction, paint adhesion, and wear resistance.

The Physics of Roughness:

Ra is primarily dictated by the laser spot diameter and the viscosity of the material. A larger spot size increases build speed but results in a "fuzzier" boundary.

Justway’s Optimization Protocol:

  • Optical Calibration: We maintain our galvanometer mirrors to ensure the laser spot remains a perfect circle, preventing "smeared" edges.
  • Layer-Height Balancing: For curved surfaces, we offer high-resolution printing (50μm or less) to reduce the microscopic "valleys" between layers.
  • Material Viscosity Control: We monitor the temperature of the resin vat in real-time. Lower viscosity ensures the resin levels out perfectly before the next layer is cured, leading to a smoother Ra.

3. Aesthetic Inspection Standards

At Justway, "good enough" is not our standard. Our QC team inspects visual parts under calibrated D65 Light Sources to simulate natural daylight, ensuring that the color you approved on screen is the color you receive in the box.

By understanding the root causes of visual defects—from material chemistry to laser optics—we provide our clients with parts that are truly "Showroom Ready."
